UN OCHA Situation Report: Türkiye 2023 Earthquakes

 

SITUATION UPDATE

  • Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced on 13 March that 48,448 people lost their lives in the two powerful earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye on 6 February, including 6,660 foreign nationals, primarily from Syria.

  • He added that more than 433 thousand tents have been established in the region, with 354 tent cities currently in operation. 21 thousand containers have been installed so far. Minister Soylu said 3 million 882 thousand hot meals are distributed throughout the region.

  • According to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the total number of people provided with shelter and accommodation is more than 3.5 million. This includes about 1.9 million people provided with shelter in the earthquake affected region and more than 1.6 million people provided with accommodation in other provinces.

  • Turkish Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, has announced that the construction for 27,253 housing units has begun.

  • 2.7 million people have been displaced in Türkiye by the earthquake.

  • Since the two major earthquakes on 6 February, there have about 16 thousand aftershocks in the impacted region, causing fear among the communities. Most recently, early on Monday 13 March, AFAD reported two earthquakes of magnitudes 4.7 and 4.5 in Malatya. Meanwhile, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 occurred in Hatay.
