Syrian Arab Republic | Earthquakes Situational Updates (8 March 2023)

 



HIGHLIGHTS

• The earthquake caused an estimated US$5.1 billion in direct physical damages in Syria, according to a World Bank report, with nearly half of the damages caused to residential buildings.

• 3.7 million children in earthquake-affected areas across Syria are facing potentially catastrophic threats, including contagious, contact-transmitted and waterborne diseases and lack of access to basic services.

• More than 100,000 people living in reception centres received hygiene kits, and more than 106,000 people in communities where water system is damaged received water since the start of the response across affected areas.

• Over 622,000 people received ready-to eat meals and over 952,000 people were assisted with hot meals across affected areas in Syria since the start of the response.

• To date, the Syria Earthquake Flash Appeal has received $218 million or 55 per cent of the requirement. Urgent funding is required to meet the most immediate needs of the affected population.
