Understanding the Global Security Environment in Eastern DRC
As part of its Social Media Monitoring programme, Insecurity Insight relies on social data to conduct public sentiment analyses on key security concerns in eastern DRC aimed to assist aid actors and organisations to better assess the global political and social environment in which they operate. In this issue, we explore public sentiment towards the East African Community (EAC) regional force and the Wagner mercenary private military company.  
 
The first brief on the EAC force presents public sentiment expressed online towards the regional organisation in the Kivu provinces of the DRC. Based on social data extracted from the Twitter and Facebook social media platforms using AI-powered software, this brief highlights that a significant majority of Kivu-based social media users who have engaged in online discussions on the EAC forces between 19 December 2022 and 17 January 2023 hold negative sentiments towards the regional force.

The second brief presents findings on online public sentiment towards the Wagner Group private military company (PMC) among social media users in the DRC. Based on social data extracted from the Twitter and Facebook social media platforms, the study finds that most DRC-based social media users who have engaged in online discussions on the Wagner Group between 1 December 2022 and 29 January 2023 hold positive sentiments towards the PMC. The prevailing sentiment among the population of social media users examined here, who represent the politically engaged educated class in the DRC, is that the Wagner Group may be a necessary recourse in the country’s struggle against the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels.
