Notwithstanding all the efforts deployed, the Central Sahel crisis shows no sign of abating. For millions of civilians, security incidents, attacks, kidnappings, and displacement continue to be a daily reality. Currently, around 14.4 million people in the region urgently require life-saving humanitarian assistance, marking a significant increase of 3.6 million since 2021. To escape violence, people are forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere, leading to almost 2.5 million internally displaced people in the region, the majority of whom are in Burkina Faso. In December 2022, over 1,600 new Nigerian refugees were registered in the Dosso department of southwestern Niger. The prolonged conflict in the region has resulted in a significant escalation of protection risks for civilians and has severely affected social services. The education of young people in the region is also at risk, with nearly 10,000 non-functional schools. To respond to this multifaceted crisis, approximately US$2 billion in funding is needed. However, despite all the efforts deployed, only 44% of the required funds were received in 2022.
