ONE YEAR OF TALIBAN RULE IN AFGHANISTAN: A PREDICTABLE DISASTER
One year ago, the Taliban established themselves as the sole rulers of Afghanistan. How has the situation developed after one year of Taliban rule? This Perspective assesses if the predictions about their harsh rule, openness to compromise about human rights, ability to run the economy, and impact on organised crime and terrorist threat turned out to be as bad as expected.
MASS DISPLACEMENT AND VIOLENT EXTREMISM IN THE SAHEL: A VICIOUS CIRCLE?
After ten years of crisis, the population in the Sahel region have faced indiscriminate violence resulting in over 2.8 million people being forcibly displaced across Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. What are the causes and effects of forced displacement? This Policy Brief unravels the complex interconnections between mass displacement, local conflict dynamics, and violent extremism in the Sahel Crisis.
TRIALS IN ABSENTIA OF FOREIGN FIGHTERS AND THIER FAMILIES?
In the Netherlands, some politicians opposed the right of Dutch citizens who joined the Islamic State/Daesh to be present at trial and questioned whether it is used as a vehicle for wider court-enforced repatriation of the Dutch citizens who remain stuck in Syria. By analysing the law at both the international and the domestic level, this Perspective explains why trials in absentia are problematic and should only be considered as a last resort.
