This week the UN, the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development tried to bring Sudan's junta into talks with its opponents in the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC).

So far, the FFC has refused to join in, accusing the junta of packing the talks with its Islamist allies and reneging on promises to release all political prisoners and stop killing protestors.

There is a sliver of a chance of progress after the United States and Saudi Arabia organised 'informal talks' between the junta leaders and civilians on 9 June, the first such meeting since the generals seized power last October.

Civilians stand firm as crisis talks falter

General Burhan's alliance with Islamist forces is blocking progress on talks to restart the transition and end Khartoum's isolation

A week of false starts and crisis talks to reinstate the transition to elections and constitutional rule made clear there is no prospect of progress without the participation of the anti-coup Forces of Freedom and Change and its allies. This was reiterated in informal talks between FFC representatives and military officers that stretched into the early hours of 10 June, and were organised by United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee and Saudi Arabia's ambassador Ali bin Hassan Jaffar.
