DAILY FLASH

Honduras – Population displacement (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • Over 24,000 irregular migrants entered Honduras between January and April 2022, mostly Cubans (70%), Nicaraguans and Venezuelans.
  • In recent weeks, this flow of irregular migrants in transit increased significantly in the municipalities of Trojes and Danli where, last month the average number of people who sought shelter exceeded 500 per day (15% were unaccompanied children), while the capacity is limited to 170 persons. The inability to pay a USD 200 fine for violating migration laws saw people stranded in the border areas.
  • The increased influx of people is generating important humanitarian challenges. The main needs are access to food and safe drinking water, basic hygiene and sanitation services, medical care (including psychosocial support), temporary shelters, solid waste management, protection, restoring family links as well as information outreach on migration procedures and access to National Migration Institute offices.
  • The UN is coordinating needs assessment. DG ECHO partners are providing assistance in the area. The current humanitarian requires better coordination and inclusion of local population in the response.

Kenya - Drought, food and nutrition insecurity (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • 4 to 5 million people are in need of humanitarian food assistance, as needs continuously outpace assistance and the impact of the March-April-May long rains onset in most of the Arid and Semi-Arid lands (ASALs) is not yet felt. 7 of the 23 ASALs counties remain in Alarm drought phase (including Marsabit where around 55% of the population is in IPC 3+), while 9 other counties are in Alert phase.
  • With rains less than 60% of average across most of Kenya, widespread livestock deaths, minimal livestock productivity, very low cropping levels, and sharp declines in purchasing power are creating large food consumption gaps and high levels of acute malnutrition. 875,596 children between 6 and 59 months are in need of nutrition assistance (an increase by 14% in the past months), including over  213,000 children with Severe Acute Malnutrition.
  • Forecast models are now predicting an elevated likelihood of yet another (the fifth) below average rain season for October – December rains, which will further escalated food needs.

Venezuela - Floods and landslides (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • On 10-11 May, heavy rainfall was reported across Merida State (north-western Venezuela), causing floods, river overflow and landslides.
  • According to media reports, one person died and three others were injured. Several houses and road sections have been reportedly damaged by floodwaters.
  • On 13-14 May, light to locally moderate rainfall is forecast for Merida State.

Colombia - Floods and landslides (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting central-northern Colombia (in particular the  Antioquia Department, including the Medellín City area, and the Santander Department) since 2 May, triggering landslides, causing rivers overflow and floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 13 May, one fatality and one injured person in Piedecuesta Municipality (Santander Department) due to a landslide that occurred on 12 May. In addition, media report 5,100 affected people, 1,000 damaged and some destroyed houses across the Apartadó Municipality (Antioquia Department), due to floods and the overflow of the Apartadó River. Media also report 50 affected people and two damaged houses in Itagüí Town (just south of Medellín City) due to a landslide.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over most of the country.

Peru - Earthquake (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • An earthquake of 5.4 M at a depth of 56 km occurred close to the coast of Lima Province (central Peru) on 12 May at 21.55 UTC (16.55 local time). The epicentre was located approximately 30 km south of Lima Capital City.
  • According to the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) at least seven people were injured in Lima and Huaral Provinces, while, several landslides and rockslides caused by the earthquake event occurred across Lima.
  • USGS PAGER estimated that more than 6,100 people were exposed to moderate shaking.

Floods and flood warnings during the last 24 hours reported by national services (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • Belarus: threshold level 1/1 on Sozh river.
  • Ukraine: threshold level 3/3 on Desna river and threshold level 2/3 on Snov and Dnipro rivers.

Lebanon (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • Some 2.2 million Lebanese, 208,000 Palestinian refugees, and 78,000 migrants need humanitarian aid in the country. 89% of the 1.5 million Syrian refugees live in extreme poverty.
  • In May 2022, as part of the Syria crisis response across the region, the EU pledged EUR 50 million in humanitarian aid to address the needs of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
  • This is in addition to EUR 20 million announced earlier in 2022, supporting the most vulnerable with food, health services and protection assistance.

Iraq (ECHO FLASH 13 May 11:55:38 AM)

  • According to the UN, some 961,000 million people have acute humanitarian needs. The dire socio-economic situation, further worsened by the coronavirus pandemic, has disrupted education, livelihoods and access to food for vulnerable Iraqis.
  • In 2022, the EU allocated EUR 20 million for humanitarian programmes. The EU is supporting efforts to help the most vulnerable, including people in camps and informal settlements.
  • In 2021, EU humanitarian aid was channelled to over 400,000 people, most of them women and children. Special attention is given to displaced people affected by the camp closures, especially those that are unable or unwilling to return to their areas of origin.
